I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. I often say that my earliest memories are of myself drawing. Before I even knew what I wanted to be, I was already creating characters, scenes, and stories in my head. An umbrella could become a magic sword, the staircase in our building could turn into a mountain, and the woods at my elementary school could easily become an enchanted forest.
I think that child is still somewhere in here.
My name is Thiago Amormino. I’m an author, illustrator, and artist based in Brazil, and I work mainly in children’s illustration. Through books, stories, and images, I feel like I can revisit those feelings from childhood and, somehow, awaken something similar in other people too, whether they are children or not. Perhaps that’s why this world continues to enchant me so much.
Human emotions are one of my greatest sources of inspiration. I like telling stories filled with feelings, stories that carry a sense of poetry and feel almost like a little breath in the rush of everyday life. I also like stories that communicate the subtleties of our feelings and make us pause and reflect on something, or that simply embrace us. I like to think that an image can transport us to that particular universe or, perhaps, take us somewhere within ourselves.
My relationship with imagination began long before my professional relationship with illustration. As a child of the ’90s, I grew up copying drawings from Turma da Mônica, a beloved Brazilian comic book series, and being influenced by classic Disney films, animes, video games, and adventure movies. All of this helped shape my creativity, my passion for fantastic worlds, and my love for stories that take us on journeys.
I’ve always made a lot with very little. I didn’t have access to the best art materials, so I made do with what I had. I would draw for days simply because I loved it. I drew from morning until night. I even drew in the dark. Drawing has always been my safe haven.
My work as an illustrator began during my Graphic Design degree, and it was there that I rediscovered illustration as a professional path. In 2011, thanks to a dear professor, I had the opportunity to illustrate my first children’s book, which certainly helped shape my career.
Since then, I’ve explored different paths between illustration and design. At times, I even stepped away from drawing again, but, in the end, I always found my way back to it. Maybe I really can’t escape it. haha
I’m a self-taught artist. So most of what I do, I learned on my own, through research, experimentation, and figuring out my own way of doing things. I’ve been trying more and more to understand what is particular about my work and, from there, continue building an artistic identity that is truly my own. I like the idea that illustration not only allows me to create worlds, but also to explore my own possibilities as an artist and as a person. I always want to discover how far I can take my work.
I was born and live in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, surrounded by the mountains of Minas Gerais, a state I love. I’m a sensitive, romantic person, deeply passionate about existence, nature, and the Universe. I’m also kind of obsessed with music and love discovering new artists and rhythms. And, if you don’t know them yet, you should definitely listen to Clube da Esquina and Milton Nascimento. ;)
In the end, I’m still doing everything that little Thiago used to do: inventing worlds and trying to discover what lies within them.
