Brazilian Cordel Riddles: Folklore

Mazza Edições, 2024-2025

I was invited by Mazza Edições to illustrate two books written by Olegário Alfredo, also known as Mestre Gaio, a renowned poet with over a hundred published cordéis.

The texts follow the style of cordel literature, a traditional Brazilian genre from the 17th century, known for its rhymed verses, oral storytelling, and woodcut-illustrated booklets. Inspired by great Brazilian woodcut masters like J. Borges, Gilvan Samico, and José Costa Leite, I set out to create a contemporary interpretation that honored tradition while offering a fresh, colorful twist.

I incorporated characteristic elements such as simplified forms, strong contrasts, and the textured look of carved wood. Although black remains a strong visual anchor, vibrant colors bring new energy to the collection, blending classic and modern aesthetics.

The books are set to launch in 2025.
