The Girl Who Never Gave Up

Editora Matrescência, 2022

Published in 2022 by Editora Matrescência and written by Luiza Ghizoni, The Girl Who Never Gave Up is part of the Virtues Collection, a series of books born from the author's clinical practice with the aim of comforting children and their families during challenging times. Each volume is composed of two different stories, starting from opposite sides of the book and meeting at the center, creating a complementary and intertwined narrative.

In this volume, the central theme is the virtue of persistence when facing the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune condition that typically develops in childhood). To illustrate this journey, I portrayed the protagonist as a child, experiencing the discovery of the disease and the daily challenges of managing it. On the other side of the book, in the story titled The Little Old Lady Who Was Too Happy, I depicted the same character now elderly, reflecting on her life and celebrating the importance of never giving up.

To convey the delicate atmosphere required by the narrative, I chose to work exclusively with traditional colored pencils and soft pastels, a technique that helped create soft, poetic images, resembling sensitive snapshots of the protagonist’s life journey.

In addition to the illustrations, I was also responsible for the entire graphic design of the collection, ensuring a cohesive visual identity that reinforced the welcoming and emotional tone of the work.
